quantm_project1 - "First Kiss"

First project at the quantm institute, SAE Vienna.
Topic was the first kiss. Of caterpillars and/or worms.

Concept:

First tryouts in photoshop. Well, as you can see, I'm not too fond of drawing ;)

First outlines of the projects.

Outlines with overlaping layers.

First coloured version of the project. A lot has been done, but I dont need to show you every step of it ;)
The trees where ment to be birch trees and looked pretty good at that time, but the contrast just didn't fit with the background and had do be redone.

Final Concept-Screen of the project. I used some Adjustmentlayers to improve the atmosphere of the scene. The trees are everything but perfect, but I had no spirit to redo the colour and detail of it anymore. The purple skyline could have had more effect on the rest of the scenery.

Rendering:

Very colourfull surfaceshaders on the scene were used for easy editing in photoshop. This way the surface of the branch for example could be easily select with the wand tool.

Maincolours of the scenery with surfaceshader. So called beautylayer (?).

Shadowlayer of the scene. In my opinion this screen looks best. I just like the white lamberts (name of the material) with the shadows on it. I always did :)

Specularlayer. Used for easily finding the highlights in Photoshop. At this point I was convinced that only material like the eyes are reflecting light. I have no idea how I came to that conclusion. Anyway, I know better now ;)

Final rendering of the project. Background are two layers from the photoshop file, positioned on planes in Maya. The front is made out of standart Objects (mainly spheres and cones), while the branch is made with nurbs.

Overpaint:

Outlines using the surfaceshader layer. Easy way to do this was to just select the area you need. Paint the inside. Contract the selection for some pixels and then delete the selected area. Of course it still has to be adjusted where overlapping parts are.

The outcome of the Maya rendering plus outlines and some details.

Usage of the Shadowlayer I made beforehand, there was almost no need for shadows made by hand, since they already where rendered. Again, adjustments are still essential.

I used the time I had left for adjustments on the colour. The scene looks better now, especially the trees if you compare them to the final concept. At least that is my opinion ;)
